The Jersey Petanque Club PBS Open Doubles Competitions
THE P.B.S. JERSEY PETANQUE CLUB OPEN & MELEE 2012
SATURDAY 5th May & SUNDAY 6th May
The Jersey Petanque Club would like to invite you to our Open competition and Melee in May 2012. Both local and overseas players are equally welcome and we look forward to meeting not only players who have been before but also those joining us for the first time. We pride ourselves in the fact that the weekend is not only of a competitive nature but also a weekend of re-kindling old friendships and making new ones whilst taking part in competitions during the weekend.
Although this always seems a little early to be thinking of this competition in May, we feel that writing to you now gives everyone a good opportunity to get preferential rates on both travel and accommodation. We are delighted to inform you that the Ommaroo Hotel will not only give you a special rate of £41.00 per person per night based on two people in a double/twin room (single supplement could be arranged direct with the hotel) but the they would also be willing to make your travel arrangements for you.
The hotel should be contacted direct for any arrangement that you may require. The Ommaroo Hotel telephone number is 01534 723493 and their e-mail address is reservations@ommaroo.com. Please ensure that you quote the Jersey Petanque Club otherwise you will not get the preferential rates.
As in previous years, may I explain how the weekend proceeds? Firstly, on the Friday prior to the Open, we hold a Vin d’Honneur in a marquee adjacent to our clubhouse commencing at 6.30 p.m. The draw for Saturday’s competition takes place whilst competitors get to know each other over a glass or two of wine. The Jersey Open Doubles Competition: The format provides everyone with a minimum of 6 games. The draw divides everyone into groups of four teams and on the Saturday morning each team will play the other three in their group. The teams will then be allocated to four competitions according to the result. All group winners go into the Main competition, the second placed teams will go into the Plate, the third placed into the Consolage 1 and the fourth into Consolage 2.
During the afternoon each team will play a further three games against others within their own competition i.e. Main, Plate, Consolage 1 and Consolage 2. The draw for three games will take on a ‘snake format’. On completion of these games, the highest placed teams in each of the four competitions will play off against third placed teams and the seconds will play against the fourth. The winners of these two games will play off for the first and second places whilst the two losing teams will be equal third. It may sound a little complicated but it really is quite simple when underway!
A Presentation Dinner will take place at the Ommaroo Hotel in the evening and it is hoped that as many people as possible will join us. It is a little disappointing if the trophy winners are not there to receive their prizes. Friends and relatives of competitors are more than welcome to join us for dinner.
The Sunday Doubles Melee: The melee will take the usual format of 4 games. After the first two games we will stop for lunch in the marquee and afterwards continue with a further two games in the afternoon. A draw for your partner and opponent will be made for each round thus possibly giving you four different partners and eight different opponents. To ensure that the competition finishes in time for competitors to catch their planes/boat the games will have a time limit. It is estimated that the competition will finish around 5.00 p.m.
The lunch will consist of soup, a cold buffet and a sweet. The cost will be £8.00. If you would like to bring any beverages other than soft drinks, which will available for purchase throughout the day, please feel free to do so. UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO SELL WINE OR BEER.
Once again, any supporters or non-players who would like to join us for lunch are very welcome but please ensure that ALL names are put on the entry form.
General Information: -
A full range of sandwiches, cakes, crisps and snacks plus hot soup, tea, coffee and cold drinks will be available all day on Saturday with all of the above with the exception of the soup and sandwiches on Sunday. In addition, Jersey Petanque Club sweaters, fleeces and tee shirts together with cochonnets, scorers, magnets & bags will be available for purchase from the Friday evening.
Should you arrive in Jersey prior to the competition, our terrains are always open if you wish to practice. We also hold Wednesday afternoon sessions – you are more than welcome to join us for a 2 p.m. start. No licences are required to enter our competitions and play is governed by ‘The Official Rules of the Game of Petanque’.
The ruling of the ‘Disputes Committee’ must be final and enforced within five minutes. An official interpreter will be involved should the dispute involve a foreign team. A nominated First Aider will be present during the competitions.
The Council of the Jersey Petanque Club very much look forward to welcoming competitors old and new in 2012. We will do all we can to make your stay and our 25th Open weekend as memorable as possible. We do hope you will be able to attend the Presentation Dinner at the Ommaroo on Saturday – it could be YOU receiving the trophies!
We are pleased to announce that we have, once again, Dorothy and Gordon de Gruchy co-ordinating the entries and running the Saturday Open event. Their contact e-mail address and telephone number is on the entry form and they would be more than happy to help in any way they can should you have any queries.
I look forward to seeing you in May. Joan Le Mercier President, Jersey Petanque Club. |
