Saturday May 3rd & Sunday May 4th
Once again I hope you will be able to join us for the May Bank Holiday weekend for our Annual PBS Open and Melee.
For the last few years over a hundred teams have joined us for our P.B.S. Open and Melee, we are very pleased to be able to report that over the time, we have gained a good reputation for providing a weekend of excellent competition within a relaxed and sociable atmosphere.
As usual, we shall start the weekend with a Vin d’Honneur and buffet on the Friday between 6.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. This gives all competitors time to meet over a glass or two of wine or, if you prefer, perhaps you would like to practice on our terrains – you are most welcome. The Saturday Open draw will take place during this time.
We have a limited space for 112 teams and as we have had a few disappointments in the past – may we suggest that you send your entry forms in as soon as possible.
The P.B.S. Open:
As has been the custom for the past few years, the format provides everyone with a minimum of 6 games. The draw will divide everyone into groups of four teams and on the Saturday morning each team will play the other three teams in their group. The teams will then be allocated to the four competitions: All the group winners go into the Main competition – the second placed teams will go into the Plate – third placed into Consollage 1 and the fourth into Consollage 2.
In the afternoon each team will play three games against other teams within their own competition with the draw being a snake format. On completion of these games, the highest placed teams in each section will play off against third placed teams and the seconds will play against the fourths. The winners of these two games will play off for first and second places whilst the two losing teams will be equal third.
The Presentation Dinner will again be held at the Ommaroo Hotel. It seems to be a very popular hotel as not only is it in a very convenient place for those not taking part in the competitions but the hotel also allow us extremely competitive prices for the weekend. The hotel is offering rates of £28.00 per person per night with an £8.00 supplement for sole occupancy. Should you wish to book accommodation, would you kindly contact the hotel direct – either by writing to them at Havre des Pas, St Helier, Jersey JE2 4UL, phoning them on 01534 723493 or faxing on 01534 759912. - When booking it is essential that you quote The Jersey Petanque Club otherwise you may well be paying a lot more! The Saturday dinner will be £17.00 per person. Please see your entry form regarding the seating plan.
If there is enough demand, we shall arrange a coach from the Ommaroo Hotel on the Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. If you are staying at this hotel and would like to take up the offer, please make sure you specify this on your entry form. Money for this will be collected when you are in Jersey but if you do confirm that you would like to use this service and you do not, (having put your name down) - we shall unfortunately have to charge you as this is all pre-paid with the bus company.
The Sunday Melee:
The Sunday melee will take the usual format of 4 games (2 before lunch and 2 after) As in other years we will stop for a leisurely lunch in the marquee with 2 more games in the afternoon. There will be a draw for each game when your partner and your opponents will be chosen. You will be playing with 4 different partners against 8 different opponents. To ensure we keep to a reasonable timetable, the 4 games will have a time limit. The weekend should finish by about 5.00pm.
The buffet lunch will be served in the marquee. Should you wish to bring any other beverages, other than the soft drinks that we are able to sell to you, please feel free to do so.
Please ensure that you enter ALL names on your entry form (including non-playing supporters who may wish to take lunch).
A full range of sandwiches, cakes, crisps and snacks plus cold drinks and tea and coffee will be available to purchase throughout Saturday. The same will be available on the Sunday with the exception of sandwiches.
Also available for purchase throughout the day will be boules, cochonnets, scorers, magnets, bags, sweaters and tee shirts.
Several teams arrive early or stay on after the weekend and we should be only too pleased if you would like to join us at our Wednesday afternoon sessions – starting at 2 p.m. If you would prefer, you are quite welcome at any other time during your visit to use the terrains.
No licences are required to enter and play is governed by “The Official Rules of the Game of Petanque”
Staging a weekend such as this would not be possible without sponsorship and we are delighted to yet again have been sponsored by Professional Business Systems Ltd. Not only do they support us financially, but take an active part in our weekend. To them our grateful thanks.
In addition the Education, Sport and Culture Department and the Tourism Department have given us generous support and practical help. To the Minister of Education, Sport and Culture and the Minister of Economic Development and their Officers, a big thank you.
Travelling to Jersey can be expensive, although it should be possible to find some very good deals if you book now, but we know that for many players it involves co-ordinating travel arrangements not only to the Island but also from home to airports or ports. We are pleased to say that again this year Isle of Wight Tours (Phone 01983 405116, Fax 01983 405584 or e-mail vanessa.trow@iowtours.com) who have been organising visitor travel and hotel arrangements to the Island for many years are able to offer a very attractive travel and accommodation package from the Isle of Wight. Those travelling from elsewhere may also find they can offer a similar competitive package.
If you require any other assistance with travel or accommodation, please contact Jersey Tourism, Liberation Square, St Helier, Jersey, JE1 1BB, Channel Islands. (Tel: 01534 448800, fax 01534 448898 or e-mail: info@jersey.com).
The Council of The Jersey Petanque Club very much look forward to seeing you again this year, we do our utmost to ensure that competitors are happy with both the competitions and their stay in our beautiful Island. Should you have any queries, PLEASE do ask us, we are here to make your stay not only a ‘pleasant’ weekend but an ‘outstanding’ one! (Let’s hope the weather helps us to do this for you)
We are delighted that Gordon & Dorothy de Gruchy (whose address and contact numbers are on the attached entry form) are once again co-ordinating the entries and running the Saturday PBS Open competition. Please remember, they are more than happy to help you in any way they can.
If you are unable to come this year could you please pass this invitation on to someone who might be interested? Many thanks
