COUTANCES VISIT JUNE 2009

After last year’s disappointment, a win in 2009!

Over the weekend of 12th to 14th June, the Jersey Petanque Club hosted 38 Petanque players from Coutances in the 24th year of the two clubs’ association. As usual, the visitors were entertained by their hosts on the Friday night.

On the Saturday, four games were played, two each side of a lunch served at the Club’s terrains at Les Quennevais. Each session consisted of 19 doubles games and after the first round, Jersey’s determination to avenge last year’s defeat appeared positive with JPC leading 14-5. The second session was a closer affair at 10-9 to the home team. The Jersey players obviously took last years after lunch drubbing to heart and were more careful of their alcoholic intake, winning the third session 12-7. However, the youth of the French team proved more resilient as the day wore on, and the local side lost the last session 9-10. However, Jersey were triumphant overall by 45-31, an impressive margin.

In the evening a dinner was held at St Ouen’s Parish Hall, as last year, at which the presentation of trophies & medals took place.

For the visitors, Dominique Mesnage & Francis Colas took top spot again and their record over the last few years has been impressive. This year, top Jersey team were Dorothy & Gordon de Gruchy with 4 wins plus 37; second were Keaven & Rita with 4 + 28 and third were Mick and Pru with 4 +25. Three other local teams also won all four of their games.

As usual, the local club will be making the return visit to Coutances at the end of August with plans to also take the trophy in France.
