Over the weekend of 9th to 11th June, 36 Petanque players from Coutances were hosted in Jersey by members of the Jersey Petanque Club. The weekend followed the usual tried and tested formula of good food and wine, interspersed with the occasional game of Petanque! Nothing less than that would satisfy our French neighbours!
On the Saturday, four games were played. The French had made some tactical changes to their team selection of which Sven himself would be proud; but to no avail - Jersey won 33 to 31, the closest of margins. In the evening a dinner was held at the Merton Hotel at which the presentations of both side’s leading teams were made.
For the visitors, Paul Gobbe repeated her victory of 2005 but this time teamed with Yvon Chaplet. Once again, Rita Le Brocq and Lawrence Rondel took the honours for Jersey and of course, Jersey accepted, graciously, the trophy for winning team.
As usual, the local club will be making the return visit to Coutances in early September.
