COUTANCES VISIT JUNE 2010

Over the weekend of 11th to 13th June, the Club hosted 35 players from Coutances in the 25th year of the two clubs’ association. As usual, the visitors were entertained by their hosts on the Friday night.

On the Saturday, four games were played, two each side of a lunch served at the Club. Each session consisted of 16 doubles games and after the first round, the hosts lead 10-6. The second session saw the same score, meaning that at lunch time, Jersey was leading 20-12. After lunch which usually seems to affect the local players more than the visitors, the third session ended 11-5 to JPC (obviously the Jersey players held back on the wine!) and in the last session, we went from strength to strength, taking it 13-3. This meant that the overall score was 44-20 to Jersey, the highest winning margin for some years.

The morning's play                                                                                   At last - time for lunch!

In the evening, the usual dinner and presentations were held at the Red Rose Restaurant where apart from the top three teams from Jersey and Coutances, a number of pairs received extra special gifts for their achievement of being fannied. Top team for Coutances were Josiette Sauvage & Yvon Chaplet and for Jersey, for the second year running, Dorothy & Gordon de Gruchy.

On the Sunday, a Pig-Roast curtesy of Fiery Fred Paisnel was held at the Club where all the guests and hosts plus some other memebers turned up. There was even enough food left for some visiting seagulls! We look forward to our return trip to Coutances at the end of August.

COUTANCES VISIT AUGUST 2010

Forty four members of the Club recently travelled to France to celebrate the 24th anniversary visit to the Loisirs Corporatifs Coutances. As usual, the Jersey group were entertained in first class fashion by their French hosts. Thankfully the bad weather of the previous Thursday did not re-appear and the sun stayed out for the weekend.

On the Saturday, 21 teams from each side played four games each in a doubles format, with two games before the usual superb lunch. Coutances took the first round 13-8 and Jersey the second, 11-10. As seems to happen each year, invigorated by lunch, Jersey took the third round 12-9, closing the defecit to just one game, going into the last round. However, again the excesses of lunch had their effect and Jersey lost the last round 13-8, meaning that overall the French team took the honours 45-39.

The usual Saturday night dinner and prize giving was held again in Gouville-sur-Mer. Following the meal, dancing took place and a certain President's husband was seen to undergo a severe learning curve on the dance-floor.

At the prize giving, top Jersey pair were Keaven Taylor & Rita Le Brocq, with Ian & Penny Foster second and Alf & Rosemarie Le Masurier third. The top team for the local club were Dominque Mesnage & Thierry Thoniard.

First place, Keaven & Rita                                           Second, Penny & Ian                         Third, Rosemarie and an obviously delighted Alf
