COUTANCES VISIT - JUNE 2008

QUELLE HORREUR!

FRENCH WIN IN JERSEY FIRST TIME IN 20 YEARS

Over the weekend of 13th to 15th June, the Jersey Petanque Club hosted 40 Petanque players from Coutances in the 23rd year of the two clubs’ association. As usual, the visitors were entertained by their hosts on the Friday night.

On the Saturday, four games were played, two each side of a lunch served at the Club’s terrains at Les Quennevais. Each session consisted of 18 doubles games and after the first round, the visitors lead 10-8. The second session saw honours shared at 9-9 whilst the home team won the first round after lunch 10-8, meaning all was equal going into the last game. Somehow it all fell apart for the Jersey team, who lost the last session 13-5. Coutances had triumphed in Jersey for the first time since 1989.

In the evening a dinner was held at St Ouen’s Parish Hall, with the kind permission of the Connetable, at which the presentation of trophies & medals took place.

For the visitors, Dominique Mesnage & Francis Colas took top spot with Josette Le Sauvage & Remi Gobbe second. This year, top Jersey team were Rita Le Brocq & Keaven Taylor.

As usual, the local club will be making the return visit to Coutances in early September.

Thanks goes to Margaret Rondel for once again ensuring that the visit of the French players went without a hitch and Joan Le Mercier, President of the Club for organising the Saturday night dinner.
