COUTANCES IN JERSEY - 2007

Over the weekend of 22nd to 24th June, the Jersey Petanque Club hosted 35 Petanque players from Coutances in the 22nd year of the two clubs’ association. Despite the weather and the intermittent reliability of the marine transport, all the visitors arrived safely at various times on the Friday.

On the Saturday, four games were played, two each side of a lunch served at the Club’s terrains at Les Quennevais. The French had made some inspired choices in their teams, hoping to at last beat the Jersey team on their home ground, but to no avail; whilst the morning’s games were close, the Jersey team pulled ahead in the afternoon and eventually took the honours 39 games to 29.

In the evening a dinner was held at the Beau Rivage Hotel at which the presentations of both side’s leading teams were made.

For the visitors, Paule Gobbe repeated her victories of both 2005 and 2006, again teamed with Yvon Chaplet, whether this hat trick means she keeps half the trophy is not quite clear. This year, top Jersey team were Joy and Derek Hart, who managed to win all four games in great style without arguing.

As usual, the local club will be making the return visit to Coutances in early September.

Thanks goes to Margaret Rondel for once again ensuring that the visit of the French players went without a hitch and Joan Le Mercier, Vice-President of the Club for organising the Saturday night dinner.
