Twenty one members of the Jersey Petanque Club travelled to the Isle of Wight to compete in the Isle of Wight Open on Saturday 28th October and the melee which was held on the Sunday (29th).
The 72 teams who entered the competition were drawn into groups for the preliminary part of the Open and each played all teams in their group. Jersey pairs of Lorraine Norman and Lawrence Rondel, and Elaine and Fred Paisnel each won their groups, thus progressing to the main competition. Here each of the local pairs was knocked out by tough opposition. The Paisnel’s lost 13-6 to an English pair who went on to compete in a close semi final and Norman and Rondel had a closer score of 13-10, again against English opponents.
Three Jersey teams qualified for the Plate competition; Jenny and David Bowyer, Joan and Ron le Herissier and Nancy Welsh with Thomas Glennie.
In the first of the Consolage competitions Georgette Bougeard and Anne Billot went out in the first round, while Margaret and Ken Stokes got through to the semi final and Kath and Dave Burt were only defeated in the final.
Garnet Billot and Graham Machon also made the finals, this time in Consolage two, but they too lost. And finally, Phyllis and Roger Saunders lost a very close semi final by just the one point in Consolage three.
On Sunday players were drawn into triples teams for the day’s competition. These played in ‘leagues’ and the winners of each went on to play in semi finals. Kath Burt and David Bowyer each achieved semi final places along with their respective team members. Unfortunately both their teams lost in close games.
