The 2006 Jersey Petanque Association’s Island triples championship took place at Samares Manor on 9th September. A total of 24 teams took part, playing in four groups.

Gordon and Dorothy de Gruchy and Ken Vibert had the best of starts beating last year’s winners. They went to beat all the other teams in their group too completing the group stage with a very creditable +44. Two teams won three of their 5 games in this group: Ron le Herissier, Alf le Masurier and Lyndon Lewis who had -1 and Maggie Allchurch, Joy Hart and Elaine Paisnel with -3.

Also unbeaten in their group were Marian and Sid Simkin who were teamed with Mark Gouedard. They too finished with a +44. Runners up in this group were Steve Foster, Fred Paisnel and Derek Hart who were only beaten by the group winners.

Robin Stockton, Peter le Liard and Richard Bowyer too were unbeaten +33. A close final match against Mick Cotillard, Darren le Brun and Tim Bechelet who had also won 4 of 4 at this stage decided this group with Stockton’s team winning 13-7.

The final group winners were Lol Therin, Ken Luce and Maurice Richard who won 4 of their games. Their one loss was to the only junior players who put up a very creditable performance against their senior opponents. Jacob Romeril (11) and Ross Powell (12) played with Jacob’s dad Chris. It was Ross’ first ever Petanque competition and this trio won 3 and with +15 were runners up in their group.

The draw for the semi finals saw the de Gruchys and Vibert against the Simkins and Gouedard. The de Gruchy team pulled away to a healthy lead, and although the Simkins team fought back they were unable to make up the deficit.

The St Mary trio of Stockton’s team also won convincingly against Luce’s team.

The final was promising to be a very close match. The first five ends proved this to be true, with both sides scoring and the Stockton team holding a 5-4 lead at this stage. However they then played two loose ends and the de Gruchy team took full advantage of the opening taking 4 then 5 points to take the title. (13-5).
